I am going to amalfi coast for first 2 weeks of June. I have heard that renting a car in summer is a bad idea because of congestion. What about early June. Is it the best way to get around or scooter or rely on bus transport?

Answer by Tuck Harvey on Wednesday, 08 April 2009 Yes, you might find “congestion” but that’s not to say renting a car is a “bad idea”. The main road from Sorrento to Amalfi and beyond is a narrow one (one lane each way) and traffic moves slowly - so much the better because one can then enjoy the scenery. Also, you’ll want to go off the main road, into the hills or out on the Lubrense Peninsula, places where the buses don’t go. A scooter would be ideal because parking spaces are relatively scarce. If you get a car, get a small one, with a tight turning radius. Be sure to get to the Isle of Capri and spend at least a night there (avoiding the hordes of daytrippers) and leave the car on the mainland. The Isle of Capri trumps the rest of the Amalfi Coast IMO. |
